A scenic fantasy
\nBased on a picture book by Jens Thiele
\nFor adults and children aged 10+<\/p>\n

\u201cThe story of Joe in a red dress is about a new kind of hero who needs to muster up a lot of courage in order to be himself\u201d, the author explains on his web site. The story is about a boy who breaks with usual gender roles and clich\u00e9s by putting on his mother\u2019s red dress and venturing out into the street. <\/p>\n

This seemingly simple story in Jens Thiele\u2019s story book is narrated by a man who is looking at pictures with a boy. \u201cIs that you in the picture\u201d, the boy asks. \u201cYes, that\u2019s me as a child. I can tell you about my childhood, if you like.\u201d But the boy doesn\u2019t want to listen to \u2018boring stories from the past\u2019, so the man tells him what he would do now, if he were a boy. He would secretly put on a dress and admire his reflection in the mirror; he would imagine the plot of a film in which he would play the leading role: a boy named Joe who is also wearing a red dress and because of it is persecuted, harassed and teased. \u201cAnd what would happen when the film is over and you are still standing in front of the mirror?\u201d, the boy asks. \u201cThen I would go out into the street in my mother\u2019s dress, for everyone to see.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s brave! Be honest, would you really do that if you were a kid today?\u201d To which the man replies, \u201cWell, that\u2019s what I did do when I was a child.\u201d <\/p>\n

The story of Joe is told by two musicians\/performers, in a niche of intimacy and publicity \u2013 the theatre stage \u2013 and raises the curtain on their own memories, fears and self-perception. <\/p>\n

The \u2018Theater Triebwerk\u2019 free drama collective has created a subtle stage adaptation which \u2018tests\u2019 the processes of identity forming:
\nWhat is my perception of
\nmasculinity\/femininity?
\nwhat embarrasses me?
\nwhat scares me?
\nand why?<\/p>\n
